So, if you were distressed with the number of tourists in Taos, you'd find Santa Fe to have a very serious infestation. However, there is a reason so many people go there. It is interesting and compared to Taos is cosmopolitan ... That's compared to Taos, you understand.
How can you not get a glimpse of "purple mountains' majesty" at sometime during your trip?
I'd vote for Paris, but you didn't include it. Depends on how you wish to cross the Continental Divide. There are the BIG and LITTLE ways. I can't advise.
Another vote? I just looked at the map, and a website for Durango. Didn't know Mesa Verde is there! Sounds good, but still I'm not willing to advise.
P.S. Grand Canyon is worth it.
